22 yr old looking for advice on making the right choices

Hey guys, I’m sure this sub is full of people asking the same question, but I’m just gonna throw my info here. I specifically am concerned about making a car purchase, which I will get to in a sec. Sorry in advance for the long post!

To start, I am 22 years old and just started my career about a year ago. Due to personal medical conditions and covid, I missed out on a couple years of young adulthood. I work remote in IT making about $40k (can make an extra $6-8k a year in commission), not worried at all about layoffs. I’m in a situation where I live with my fiancee and her parents and do not need to worry about rent, utilities, or most food expenses. Long term looking to build a home on a currently owned plot of land (currently funneling a portion of savings towards this).

My current bills are around $350 or so a month and I put about $250 a month into long term savings (not counting saving for house). I put an extra $125 into ROTH IRA a month and put 10% (5% employer match on top of that) to 401k. I like to live a comfortable lifestyle with spending $500ish a month on whatever I want.

My fiancee is currently not working, but will be finishing school in the next 12 to 18 months and making $50k+ once she does. She has little to no personal bills.

We are currently looking to buy a car and want to make sure we don’t go over our budget. Of course we are close to limitless (within reason) once she starts working, but for this year and a half or so where I’m the sole income, I don’t want to dig myself into a hole.

We would like to buy a new car to last us 10-12 years. Looking at a small-mid sized SUV in the $30k range, with a hard limit of $35k. We would only ever need one car for the long foreseeable future. I specifically have $5k in cash set aside for a down payment/initial fees. Open to used, but really don’t want anything older than 5 years so we don’t have to constantly fix things. 3 years and 40k miles only saves us $4-5k so I don’t think used is really even worth it. Also credit score is about 700.

I know it’s really pushing it to buy a car like that on just my income, but would we be alright to float like this for a bit until she starts working or should I try to play it safer? Thank you to anybody who reads this!
